My Daddy and I would do the dump run weekly and honestly, I loved it. There was always someone else's junk that appeared to be a gem to me. I found books, jewelry and many other items. The gems piled up so high that the dump worker set some aside so people no longer had to dig through literal garbage to find something useful.
Because of this, Ima garbage room picker. You would not believe what people throw out. Aside from bottles with deposits on them, there are kitchen items, fine china, and perfectly edible food.
I caught the bldg mgr throwing out a bag of lentils as though lentils could ever expire.
Some people wouldn't know food insecurity if it bit them in the ass.
Yesterday I found a full, unopened box of expensive granola, an unopened bottle of honey/shallot salad dressing (that was yummy), and a bag of pristine apples, oranges, potatoes, and carrots.
I dug them out, took home the dressing, and left the rest behind the storage bldg near where I park my car.
This got me to thinking ... we need donation boxes in every tenement bldg. I've given food, others have given food and for that matter, a portion of my wardrobe came from what I now call the "laundry room boutique".
Please think of others before you throw good food away.
I'm considering contacting head office about this, but I'd like it to be a program in every bldg in Ontario.
My neck's getting sore from shaking it over other peoples' sillyness.
DO NOT THROW GOOD FOOD AWAY!
